Description

Introduction It has long been acknowledged that risk is essential for development and yet change brings with it anxiety and a need to ensure that the risks are reasonable and worth the investment required. An area of significant change within the profession of occupational therapy in the last decade has been the number and frequency of role-emerging placements. These can be defined as student placements in settings with no established occupational therapy service (Totten and Pratt 2001). Calculations by the College of Occupational Therapists (2007) estimate that 4% (262) of all placements in 2005-06 were in role-emerging settings, a statistic that is thought to be steadily rising, as reflected anecdotally in the authors' own institutions. These changes have led to an inevitable debate about how appropriate these placements are and how they contribute to the development of the professional and the profession. This opinion piece seeks to set out the key points for discussion.
